Le comité de la fête du Canada de la MRC de Deux-Montagnes est extrêmement heureux d’annoncer que notre président d’honneur pour la célébration de 2025 est le conseiller municipal de Deux-Montagnes et observateur pendant 12 ans au comité de la fête du Canada, M. Michel Mendes. Michel prendra sa retraite de la politique en novembre, et le Comité ne peut penser à un meilleur moment pour célébrer sa contribution à Deux-Montagnes, à la vie communautaire et à notre célébration traditionnelle de la fête du Canada.
Né à Longueuil en 1955, Michel est déménagé quand il était jeune, notamment à l’école secondaire de Sault Ste-Marie, en Ontario, avant de s’installer à St-Hubert, sur la Rive-Sud de Montréal. Michel est titulaire d’un diplôme en administration des affaires de l’Université Concordia. Il a épousé l’amour de sa vie, Carmen, en 1981.
Lorsque son employeur de longue date, Tennant, a déménagé ses bureaux à Laval en 1990, Michel et Carmen ont trouvé une jolie petite ville à proximité, appelée Deux-Montagnes, où ils se sont installés et ont élevé leurs trois enfants. Comme le font de nombreux parents, Michel a fait du bénévolat au soccer et au basketball et a siégé au conseil d’administration de l’école Sauvé et de l’Académie Lafontaine. Mais ce n’est que lorsque Michel a suivi son voisin en politique qu’il a commencé à contribuer davantage à notre communauté. Candidat avec son ami proche, maintenant maire Denis Martin, Michel a remporté son premier de trois mandats à titre de conseiller municipal du district Du Côteau en 2013.
En tant qu’élu, Michel est fier de la contribution qu’il a apportée à Deux-Montagnes, notamment compte tenu des formidables changements que vit la ville. Il a mené de nombreuses initiatives grâce à son implication auprès de la Corporation des boisés et des parcs naturels de Deux-Montagnes, du Comité de la famille, du Comité consultatif d’urbanisme, du Comité de la Circulation, entre autres. Michel est particulièrement fier de cette initiative d’intégrer un sentier pédestre sur la piste cyclable de la ville. La Fête des voisins en juin, le pique-nique familial en août et l’événement de bricolage familial en novembre sont tous très populaires, en partie grâce au dévouement de Michel envers sa communauté. Le maire Martin a récemment déclaré que Michel mettait toujours le citoyen au centre des discussions au conseil municipal, ce qui était la raison de son succès dans la communauté.
À la fin de 2013, le maire Martin a lancé une politique consistant à placer des conseillers municipaux à titre d’observateurs auprès d’organismes communautaires clés, et Michel Mendes a ainsi commencé sa relation avec le Comité de la fête du Canada. L’année 2025 marque la 12e et dernière fête du Canada de Michel en tant qu’observateur, et au cours de ces 12 ans, notre traditionnelle célébration, événement phare pour Deux-Montagnes et pour la Rive-Nord de Montréal, a pris une croissance fulgurante. Michel a été un champion absolu de la fête du Canada, soutenant nos efforts pour augmenter le financement et obtenir un soutien technique et logistique supplémentaire des différents services municipaux. Le lien entre la Ville de Deux-Montagnes et notre Comité n’a jamais été aussi fort, et Michel, avec l’appui de Denis et du Conseil, en a été le catalyseur.
De plus, Michel a toujours contribué en tant que bénévole pour l’installation le 30 juin, pour le démontage le 2 juillet, pour retourner des hamburgers dans la cuisine ou pour conduire les enfants dans le train. Nous espérons certainement que Michel continuera à faire du bénévolat après la fin de sa carrière politique.
Michel a pris sa retraite complète de Tennant en 2023 et se retire maintenant de la politique. Carmen et lui ont construit une maison à Mirabel sur une propriété familiale, où il pourra profiter de sa retraite à la fin de son mandat de conseiller municipal en novembre. Nous espérons revoir Michel ici sur le terrain pour les prochaines fêtes du Canada, mais le Comité exprime une immense gratitude envers Michel pour sa contribution exceptionnelle à notre communauté et à notre célébration traditionnelle.
The Canada Day Committee for the Deux-Montagnes MRC is extremely pleased to announce that our honorary president for the 2025 celebration is Deux-Montagnes City Councillor and 12-year Observer on the Canada Day Committee, Mr. Michel Mendes. Michel is retiring from politics this November, and the Committee cannot think of a better time to celebrate Michel’s contribution to Deux-Montagnes, to community life and to our traditional Canada Day celebration.
Born in Longueuil in 1955, Michel did move around in his early years, including going to high school in Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario, before settling down in St-Hubert on Montreal’s South Shore. Michel holds a degree in business administration from Concordia University. He married the love of his life, Carmen in 1981.
When his long-time employer, Tennant, moved their offices to Laval in 1990, Michel and Carmen found a cute little town nearby called Deux-Montagnes, where they settled and raised their three children. As many parents do, Michel volunteered his time with soccer and basketball, and served on the board of directors of both Sauvé School and l’Académie Lafontaine. But it wasn’t until Michel followed his neighbour into politics, that he began contributing in a larger way to our community. Running with his close friend, now Mayor Denis Martin, Michel won his first of three mandates as City Councillor for the Du Côteau District in 2013.
As an elected official, Michel is proud of how he has contributed to Deux-Montagnes, particularly given the tremendous change that the city is experiencing. He has led many initiatives through his involvement with the Corporation des boisés et des parcs naturels de Deux-Montagnes, the Comité de la famille, the Comité consultatif d’urbanisme, the Comité de la Circulation among others. Michel is particularly proud of this initiative to incorporate a walkway on the town’s bicycle path. The Fête du voisinage in June, the Family Picnic in August and the Family Arts and Crafts event in November are all going strong in part because of Michel’s devotion to his community. Mayor Martin was recently quoted as saying that Michel always put the citizen at the center of discussions on City Council, which was the reason for his success in the community.
In late 2013, Mayor Martin initiated a policy of placing city councillors as observers with key community organizations, and thus Michel Mendes began his relationship with the Canada Day Committee. 2025 marks Michel’s 12th and final Canada Day as an observer, and through out these 12 years, our traditional celebration, a signature event for Deux-Montagnes and for Montreal’s North Shore, has grown tremendously. Michel has been an absolute champion for Canada Day, supporting our efforts to increase funding and to gain additional technical and logistical support from the different municipal services. The bond between the City of Deux-Montagnes and our Committee has never been stronger, and Michel, with the support of Denis and the Council, has been the catalyst for this.
To add, Michel has always pitched in as a volunteer for setting up on June 30th, for tearing-down on July 2nd, for flipping burgers in the kitchen to driving kids around on the train. We are certainly hopeful that Michel will continue on as a volunteer after the end of his political career.
Michel fully retired from Tennant in 2023 and now is retiring from politics. He and Carmen have built a home in Mirabel on a family property, where he will get to enjoy his retirement at end of his city councillor mandate in November. We hope to see Michel again here at the field for future Canada Days, but the Committee extends a huge debt of gratitude to Michel for his outstanding contribution to our community and to our traditional celebration.
Deux-Montagnes, le 16 juin 2025 – Le voile est officiellement levé sur la programmation de la 54e édition de la fête du Canada. Le maire de Deux-Montagnes, M. Denis Martin, et le président du comité organisateur pour la MRC de Deux-Montagnes, M. Tom Whitton, invitent chaleureusement tous les citoyens de la MRC à se réunir en grand nombre le mardi 1er juillet au parc Central, à Deux-Montagnes, pour une journée de festivités.
Organisée par un comité de bénévoles dévoués, en partenariat avec la Ville, cette fête demeure la seule célébration officielle de la Confédération canadienne sur la couronne nord de Montréal, et l’une des rares tenues dans la région des Laurentides.
« La Ville de Deux-Montagnes est fière d’être partenaire de la fête du Canada, un événement fédérateur qui rassemble chaque année des milliers de citoyens de la région », a déclaré le maire Denis Martin. « C’est un privilège de pouvoir compter sur l’engagement exemplaire du comité de bénévoles. Grâce à leur dévouement, une programmation riche, inclusive et représentative de notre communauté est offerte à tous, permettant de célébrer fièrement notre identité canadienne. »
« La participation à l’édition 2024 fut extraordinaire, un record pour nous. Cette célébration est un événement signature pour la région et nous visons à reproduire le succès de l’année dernière en 2025 », a souligné monsieur Tom Whitton du comité organisateur. « Deux-Montagnes demeure sans contredit le lieu le plus propice à la célébration de la fête du Canada sur la couronne nord. Je tiens à remercier chaleureusement les partenaires clés de l’événement — la Ville de Deux-Montagnes, le gouvernement du Canada ainsi que la Caisse Desjardins de Saint-Eustache–Deux-Montagnes — pour leur contribution essentielle à la réussite de cette fête emblématique et porteuse de notre patrimoine collectif. »
Une programmation diversifiée, pour toute la famille!
Dès 11 h, une foule d’activités à caractère familial sera offerte sur le site : jeux gonflables, maquillage pour enfants, tours de train, bingo, poches etc. De retour cette année, un marché des artisans s’y tiendra de 11 h à 17 h. Suivant la cérémonie d’ouverture à 12 h, une course pour enfants aura lieu, suivie de l’épreuve du lancer d’œufs à 14 h!
Pour animer le site, des prestations musicales seront offertes en continu de 14 h 30 à 23 h. Le spectacle de fin de soirée sera assuré par le groupe KISSED, qui offrira une expérience hommage au rock classique des années 70 et 80 du groupe Kiss. Également, comme le veut la tradition, un superbe feu d’artifice illuminera le ciel à 22 h!

Le président d’honneur
Le comité de la Fête du Canada de la MRC de Deux-Montagnes est heureux d’annoncer que M. Michel Mendes, conseiller municipal et observateur assidu du comité depuis 12 ans, sera notre président d’honneur pour l’édition 2025. Alors qu’il s’apprête à tirer sa révérence de la vie politique en novembre, c’est avec émotion que nous célébrons l’homme derrière tant de gestes posés pour le bien commun.
Né à Longueuil, Michel a grandi entre Sault Ste-Marie et la Rive-Sud de Montréal. Avec sa conjointe Carmen, il s’est installé à Deux-Montagnes en 1990, charmé par la tranquillité de cette charmante ville. Ils y ont élevé leurs trois enfants, et Michel, comme tant de parents engagés, s’est d’abord investi dans les sports et le milieu scolaire avant de se tourner vers la politique municipale. Depuis 2013, il siège au conseil municipal, défendant avec cœur des projets qui ont façonné la ville : sentiers pédestres, comités citoyens, événements rassembleurs. Toujours à l’écoute, il place les citoyens au centre de chaque décision.
Son rôle auprès du comité de la Fête du Canada a été déterminant. Grâce à son appui indéfectible, la fête a pris son envol, devenant un événement phare sur la Rive-Nord. Qu’il retourne des hamburgers, monte des tentes ou guide les enfants à bord du petit train, Michel n’a jamais compté ses heures. Alors qu’il amorce une nouvelle étape à Mirabel, nous lui disons merci. Merci pour son dévouement, sa chaleur, et pour avoir incarné, année après année, l’esprit même de la fête : rassembleur, généreux et profondément humain.

Deux-Montagnes, June 16th 2025 – The veil is officially lifted on the schedule for the 54th edition of Canada Day. The Mayor of Deux-Montagnes, Mr. Denis Martin, and the President of the Organizing Committee for the Deux-Montagnes MRC, Mr. Tom Whitton, warmly invite all citizens of the MRC to gather in large numbers on Tuesday, July 1st at Central Park, in Deux-Montagnes, for a day of festivities.
Organized by a committee of dedicated volunteers, in partnership with the City, this event remains the only official celebration of Canada’s Confederation on Montreal’s North Shore, and one of the few held in the Laurentians.
“The City of Deux-Montagnes is proud to be a partner of Canada Day, a unifying event that brings together thousands of citizens of the region every year,” said Mayor Denis Martin. “It is a privilege to be able to count on the exemplary commitment of the volunteer committee. Thanks to their dedication, a rich, inclusive schedule of activities that is representative of our community is offered to all, proudly celebrating our Canadian identity. »

A variety of activities, for the whole family!
Starting at 11 a.m., a host of family-friendly activities will be offered on the site: inflatable games, face painting for children, train rides, bingo, cornhole, etc. Back this year, an artisans’ market will be held there from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Following the opening ceremony at 12 p.m., a children’s race will take place, followed by the egg toss event at 2 p.m.!
To liven up the site, musical performances will be offered continuously from 2:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The late-night show will be performed by the band KISSED, who will offer a tribute experience to the classic rock of the 70s and 80s by the band Kiss. Also, as tradition dictates, a superb fireworks display will light up the sky at 10 p.m.!

Honorary President
The Canada Day Committee of the Deux-Montagnes MRC is pleased to announce that Mr. Michel Mendes, municipal councillor and dedicated observer of the committee for the past 12 years, will be our honorary president for the 2025 edition. As he prepares to retire from politics in November, it is with emotion that we celebrate the man behind so many actions for the common good.
Born in Longueuil, Michel grew up between Sault Ste. Marie and the South Shore of Montreal. With his wife Carmen, he moved to Deux-Montagnes in 1990, attracted by the tranquility of this charming city. They raised their three children there, and Michel, like so many committed parents, first got involved in sports and the school environment before turning to municipal politics. Since 2013, he has been a member of the municipal council, wholeheartedly defending projects that have shaped the city: pedestrian trails, citizen committees, unifying events. Always listening, he places citizens at the centre of every decision.
His role with the Canada Day Committee was pivotal. Thanks to his unwavering support, the celebration took off, becoming a flagship event on the North Shore. Whether he’s flipping hamburgers, setting up tents or guiding the children on the little train, Michel has never counted his hours. As he begins a new phase in Mirabel, we thank him for her dedication, his warmth, and for having embodied, year after year, the very spirit of the festival: unifying, generous and profoundly human.

Leur palmarès récent inclut une 3e place au Canada en 2024, ainsi qu’une 15e place au niveau mondial. Loucas Éthier, 24 years old, and Kelly Ann Laurin, 18 years old, have been a pairs figure skating team for 6 years. Originally from the Laurentians, they train at l’École Excellence Rosemère and are members of the national team since 2022. Their determination and the talent propelled them rapidly upon the international scene.
In the senior’s category, Loucas and Kelly Ann have reach important heights, making an impression in the figure skating world. Their recent results include a 3rd place in Canada in 2024, along with a 15th place at Worlds. Their impressive performance has been on display at other international competitions – 8th place at the Four Continents Championships in China in 2024, 7th place at the NHK Trophy in Japan in 2023, 5th Place at Skate Canada in Vancouver in 2023, and on and on.
Motivated by a shared passion and a common vision, Loucas Ethier and Kelly Ann Laurain continue to push the limits of their art, inspiring and captivating the public with each performance on the ice.
FÊTE DU CANADA 2024 : LE 1ER JUILLET, LA TRADITION SE POURSUIT À DEUX-MONTAGNES!
Deux-Montagnes, le 17 juin 2024 – La programmation de la 53e édition de la fête du Canada, célébrée à Deux-Montagnes, a été dévoilée. Le maire de Deux-Montagnes, monsieur Denis Martin, et le président du Comité organisateur de la fête du Canada pour la MRC Deux-Montagnes, monsieur Tom Whitton, ont d’ores et déjà convié l’ensemble de la population de la MRC à se rassembler en grand nombre le lundi 1er juillet au parc Central, à Deux-Montagnes.
Cette fête, organisée par un comité de bénévoles et en collaboration avec la Ville de Deux-Montagnes, est la seule célébration de la Confédération canadienne sur la couronne nord de Montréal et parmi les seules dans les Laurentides. « C’est un honneur pour la Ville de Deux-Montagnes d’être partenaire de la fête du Canada, un événement toujours très rassembleur pour les citoyens de la région. C’est également un privilège de pouvoir compter sur un comité de bénévoles hors pair. Leur précieuse implication permet à des milliers de personnes de célébrer notre fierté d’être Canadien autour d’une programmation diversifiée et à notre image », a déclaré monsieur Denis Martin, maire de Deux-Montagnes.
« La température nous a malheureusement joué des tours l’année dernière. Cette année, nous espérons atteindre le succès de 2022, alors que quelque 10 000 personnes s’étaient rassemblées au parc Central. Nous avons bien hâte de retrouver cette atmosphère de fête entre amis et familles cette année! », a souligné monsieur Tom Whitton du comité organisateur. « Deux-Montagnes est de loin le meilleur endroit pour célébrer la fête du Canada sur la couronne nord. Je profite de l’occasion pour remercier nos partenaires, soit la Ville de Deux-Montagnes, le gouvernement du Canada et la Caisse Desjardins de Saint-Eustache–Deux-Montagnes pour leur contribution importante à notre événement patrimonial et marquant. »
UNE PROGRAMMATION DIVERSIFIÉE, POUR TOUTE LA FAMILLE!
Dès 11 h, une foule d’activités à caractère familial sera offerte sur le site : jeux gonflables, maquillage pour enfants, tours de train, tournoi de fer, bingo, poches etc. De retour cette année, un marché des artisans s’y tiendra de 11 h à 17 h. Suivant la cérémonie d’ouverture à 12 h, une course pour enfants aura lieu, suivie de l’épreuve du lancer d’œufs à 14 h!
Pour animer le site, des prestations musicales seront offertes en continu de 14 h 30 à minuit. Le spectacle de fin de soirée sera assuré par le groupe ROCKOLOGY, qui offrira une expérience hommage au rock classique anglophone et francophone des années 70 et 80. Également, comme le veut la tradition, un superbe feu d’artifice illuminera le ciel à 22 h!

Deux-Montagnes, June 17, 2024 – The schedule for the 53rd edition of Canada Day celebrated in Deux-Montagnes, was announced. The Mayor of Deux-Montagnes, Mr. Denis Martin, and the President of the Canada Day Committee for MRC Deux-Montagnes, Mr. Tom Whitton have invited the entire MRC population to gather in large numbers on Monday, July 1st at Central Park in Deux-Montagnes.
This event, organized by a committee of volunteers in collaboration with the City of Deux-Montagnes, is the only celebration of Canada’s birthday on Montreal’s North Shore, and among the only ones in the Laurentians. “It is an honour for the City of Deux-Montagnes to be a partner for Canada Day, an event which always brings citizens from our region together. It is also a privilege to count on such an unmatched committee of volunteers. Their precious involvement allows for thousands of people to celebrate our pride in being Canadian with a diverse schedule in our image,” declared Mr. Denis Martin, Mayor of Deux-Montagnes.
“Unfortunately, the weather played a role in our event last year. This year, we hope to reach the success of our 2022 event, where nearly 10,000 people gathered at Central Park. We look forward to regaining this festive atmosphere between friends and family this year,” noted Mr. Tom Whitton from the organizing committee. “Deux-Montagnes is, by far, the best place to celebrate Canada Day on the North Shore. I must thank our partners, the City of Deux-Montagnes, the Government of Canada, and Desjardins – Caisse de Saint-Eustache/Deux-Montagnes for their substantial contribution to our memorable cultural event.”
A DIVERSE SCHEDULE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
At 11am, many family-related activities will take place on site: inflatable games, face-painting for kids, train rides, horseshoes and cornhole tournaments, bingo, etc. Returning for 2024, an Artisans Market will take place from 11am to 5pm. After the opening ceremony at noon, the traditional kids race will take place, followed by the annual egg toss at 2pm.
To liven up the site, musical performances will be offered from 2:30pm right up to midnight. The headlining performance will be from ROCKOLOGY, which will offer a tribute to anglophone and francophone classic rock from the 70s and 80s. Also, as tradition dictates, a wonderful fireworks display will light up the sky at 10pm.

CanadaDay Fireworks – The hot topic of the day – With the forest fires across the province and the recent directives from the government, we are following the situation closely. No decision has been taken as of yet with regards to the July 1st fireworks in Deux-Montagnes. We are aware of the fireworks cancellations for the Fête Nationale in some neighbouring cities. A Deux-Montagnes tradition is back once again on July 1st!
Deux-Montagnes, June 5, 2023 – The program for the 52nd edition of Canada Day, celebrated in Deux-Montagnes, was unveiled at a press conference held on June 5th at City Hall. The Mayor of Deux-Montagnes, Denis Martin, and the President of the Canada Day Organizing Committee for the Deux-Montagnes MRC, Tom Whitton, are inviting all citizens of the MRC to gather in large numbers on Saturday, July 1st, at Central Park in Deux-Montagnes.
Organized by a volunteer committee in collaboration with the Ville de Deux-Montagnes, this is the only celebration of Canada’s Confederation in the North Shore region of Montreal, and one of the few in the entire Laurentians. “It’s an honour for the Ville de Deux-Montagnes to be a partner in Canada Day, an event that always brings the region’s citizens together. It’s also a privilege to be able to count on an outstanding committee of volunteers. Their invaluable involvement enables thousands of people to celebrate our pride in being Canadian through a diversified program that reflects our image,” declared Denis Martin, Mayor of Deux-Montagnes.
“After two-consecutive virtual editions of the event due to the pandemic, last year’s open-air celebrations were a great success, with some 10,000 people gathering in Central Park. We can’t wait to get back to the festive atmosphere of friends and family,” says Tom Whitton of the organizing committee. “Deux-Montagnes is by far the best place to celebrate Canada Day on the North Shore. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, the Ville de Deux-Montagnes, the Government of Canada and the Caisse Desjardins de Saint-Eustache-Deux-Montagnes, for their significant contribution to our heritage event.
Enjoy a wide range of programs suitable for the entire family! Starting at 11 am, a host of family activities will be offered on-site, including inflatable games, face painting for children, train rides, a horseshoe tournament and bingo. New for this year, an artisans’ market will be held from 11 am to 4 pm. Following the opening ceremony at 12 pm, a children’s race will take place, followed by the egg-throwing event at 2:30 pm.
Get ready to enjoy non-stop music on the site from 3 pm til midnight! The late-night performance will be presented by the ELTON SONGS group, paying homage to the legendary Elton John. And don’t miss out on the spectacular fireworks show at 10 pm – it’s a long-time Deux-Montagnes tradition not to be missed!
An extremely dedicated volunteer for some 20 years…
In any given year, the Canada Day Committee seeks to recognize individuals who contribute to community life in our region by bestowing upon them the title of honorary president for our festivities. 2023 is no exception, as the committee is proud to announce that this year’s honorary president is current and outgoing Deux-Montagnes Softball Association (DMSA) president, Trevor Horwood.
Born in Montreal in 1970, Trevor’s family moved to the region in the late 70s, flip-flopping between Deux-Montagnes and Saint-Eustache, while spending weekends at his grandparents’ place in Val-David. In the mid 90s, Trevor began dating a childhood friend, Gina Marricco, marrying the love of his life in 1998. They bought their first house in Saint-Eustache in 1999, followed 10 days later by the birth of their first son, Evan. Their two other boys came along, Corey in 2001 and Adam in 2006. With Evan having recently left the coop for western Canada, the remaining family continues to live in Saint-Eustache to this day.
Trevor’s adventure with Deux-Montagnes softball came somewhat late. He began playing recreationally in the late 1990s. With Evan at T-Ball age, Trevor stepped up as a coach in the DMSA and has never looked back. 20 years later, Trevor is now in his final year with the DMSA, having been a coach or a supervisor for all his kids.
Since 2010, Trevor has also served the organization as an executive, first as Vice-President, Junior Leagues, ensuring the growth and stability for boys and girls softball, a unique recreational offering for the region. In 2018, Trevor ascended to the role of President of the entire organization (Juniors and Adults), a position which he will relinquish at this fall’s annual general meeting. Trevor and his family have basically been a mainstay at Olympia Park for 20 years. As Trevor leaves the organization this fall for new challenges, the DMSA is on solid footing – 52 teams, including 16 kids teams. He can be proud of what he has accomplished over his 20 years with the DMSA.
Besides softball, throughout all that time, Trevor and Gina remained active parents, driving the kids to hockey or baseball all across the province. Trevor has coached hockey as well and is certainly at Gina’s side, supporting her “Team Sugar Rush” fundraising activities for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
Any interaction with Trevor will reveal instantly the type of person you are dealing with – hard-working, devoted, humble, family-oriented, kind. Having dedicated most of his volunteerism in Deux-Montagnes, the children and parents of this city and the surrounding region have all benefitted from his passion for providing a summer pastime for our youth. Trevor is a role model for others, and his shoes will be hard to fill in the DMSA. What is next for Trevor is not clear, though you may see hints of his future at Central Park, as he and former honorary president, Troy Ewenson, will be running the first annual Canada Day cornhole (beanbags) tournament.
Congratulations Trevor on your outstanding contribution to community life and we look forward to seeing what is next!
Chaque année, le Comité de la fête du Canada reconnait une personne de la communauté qui contribue à la vie de la région, et ce, en leur accordant le titre de président d’honneur des célébrations. Le comité est fier d’annoncer que le président d’honneur pour 2023 est le président actuel et sortant de l’Association softball Deux-Montagnes (ASDM), monsieur Trevor Horwood.
Né à Montréal en 1970, Trevor a déménagé dans la région vers la fin des d’années 70. Il a résidé à Deux-Montagnes et Saint-Eustache et passé les fins de semaine chez ses grands-parents à Val-David. Dans les années 90, Trevor a commencé à fréquenter une amie d’enfance, Gina Marricco, avant de l’épouser en 1998. Ils ont acheté leur première maison à Saint-Eustache en 1999 et, 10 jours plus tard, ils accueillaient leur premier fils, Evan. Deux autres garçons sont venus par la suite, Corey en 2001 et Adam en 2006. La famille demeure toujours à Saint-Eustache, bien que leur fils Evan soit récemment parti s’établir dans l’Ouest canadien.
L’aventure de Trevor dans le monde de la balle-molle deux-montagnaise a débuté vers la fin des années 1990, au niveau récréatif. Quand Evan a eu l’âge de jouer au « T-Ball », Trevor s’est offert comme entraîneur dans l’ASDM et son implication bénévole n’a jamais arrêté. Vingt ans plus tard, Trevor en est à sa dernière année au sein de l’ASDM.
Depuis 2010, il est membre exécutif de l’association, d’abord comme vice-président – Ligue junior, en assurant la stabilité et la croissance pour le softball masculin et féminin, une offre récréative unique dans la région. En 2018, il est devenu président de l’association (volets enfants et adultes), un poste qu’il quittera à l’assemblée générale annuelle qui se tiendra l’automne prochain. Il peut certainement être fier de ce qu’il a accompli pendant 20 années au sein de l’ASDM et on peut affirmer que Trevor et sa famille auront joué un rôle essentiel pour la balle-molle dans la région. L’ASDM est maintenant sur des bases solides, avec 52 équipes, dont 16 équipes de jeunes.
En parallèle de cette implication, Trevor et son épouse ont été des plus actifs, en conduisant leurs enfants partout à travers la province pour le hockey et le baseball. D’ailleurs, Trevor a aussi été entraîneur de hockey et il est toujours aux côtés de Gina pour l’encourager dans ses efforts avec l’équipe « Sugar Rush » afin de lever des fonds pour le « Relais pour la Vie » de la Société canadienne du cancer.
Il suffit d’un échange avec Trevor pour comprendre qu’il s’agit d’un homme travaillant, dévoué, humble, familial et réellement gentil. Ayant offert la majorité de son bénévolat à Deux-Montagnes, des centaines d’enfants et de parents de Deux-Montagnes et de la région ont bénéficié de sa passion pour la balle-molle et de son souhait de rendre accessible cette activité estivale à nos jeunes.
On ne sait pas encore ce qui occupera Trevor à l’avenir, mais des indices seront donnés au parc Central, car Troy Ewenson (aussi un ancien président d’honneur) et lui-même organisent le premier tournoi annuel de Cornhole (jeu de poches) pour la fête du Canada.
Félicitations Trevor pour ta contribution remarquable à la vie communautaire et nous attendons avec impatience tes prochains défis.
